Bairnsdale Friends of East Timor Annual Update
September 2011

Facts about East Timor

Population: 1.1 million
Young people under 18 years: 50%
Unemployed young people: 80%
Life expectancy at birth: 62 years
Infant mortality rate: 40 per 1000 live births
People living below 55c US per day: 41%

Many East Timorese live in poverty, with poor sanitation, poor water supply, and little access to services - health, education and transport. People are often very malnourished - TB, Malaria, Dengue fever and water-borne diseases are common.

Bairnsdale Friends of East Timor funding since 2004

  • Provided nutritious lunches at St Antonio's Secondary College, Baucau.
  • Subsidised costs of English - Tetum Dictionaries.
  • Paid school fees for poor students at St Antonio's Secondary College, Baucau.
  • Paid expenses for Salesian Youth Group, Baucau.
  • Fully supported fourteen and partially supported eighteen Tertiary students, now graduated.

In 2011 we are:

  • Fully supporting three trainee teachers at the Marist Teachers College in Baucau.
  • Paying fees for fourteen students at Don Bosco Trade School in Dili.
  • Fully supporting four University students in Jogjakarta in Indonesia.
  • Partially supporting four tertiary students at Dili Institute.

Volunteers

  • Twenty-six men and women have made fifty-two visits to Baucau, staying as guests of the Salesian Community.
  • They have taught English and other subjects at St Antonio's and at other schools.
  • They have provided vocational guidance for senior students and contributed to their welfare needs, and they have joined in extra-curricular activities.
